We would like to alert you to the importance of FIV vaccination to protect your cat against a potentially deadly disease, Feline AIDS. Feline AIDS is caused by infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). FIV interferes with the immune system of a cat and can eventually lead to death in some cats. It is reported that around up to 26% of cats in Victoria have been infected with FIV. There is no effective treatment or cure for infected cats. Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease and an effective vaccine is available. Initial vaccination requires 3 injections 2 – 4 weeks apart, then annually together with the standard cat vaccine for the life of the cat. Adult cats will need to be tested to ensure they are not already infected. Testing can be done in the clinic with results available within 10 minutes. Kittens under 6 months of age can be immunised without testing. To help make your decision please consider the following:
