Welcome to the September edition of Animal Aid e-news. We hope you are enjoying reading these newsletters as much as we like bringing them to you.A very important message first up followed by a heartwarming adoption story. Enjoy.

Pure Madness
We are generally not in the habit of being sensationalist but I feel that we would be remiss if we did not bring this to your attention. We are asking everyone we know, to ask everyone they know, to watch ABC1 at 8:30pm on Thursday September 10. Catalyst will be airing a very important documentary that is a must see for every dog lover. ‘Pedigree Dogs Exposed’ lifts the lid on the health and welfare implications currently facing many pedigree dogs.

We need to warn you that some viewers may find a few of the scenes a little distressing. They depict some of the health problems that are a direct result of breeding for appearance rather than conformation. But we ask that you steel yourself to watch because although this is a BBC Documentary, the Australian dog world is no different.

Our standards may differ on individual characteristic requirements, but they are still sadly lacking when it comes to putting the interests of the dog ahead of their aesthetic desirability.

Please don’t think that just because we are an animal shelter that we are somehow anti-pedigree, this is just not true. We love all dogs and therefore are concerned for their health and wellbeing. We know the joy that a pet can bring into our lives, but there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching them suffer.

So please click on the link below and read the article that appears on the farmonline site and then tune in on Thursday night. You may not agree with everything that is said in this program but you might just look at some of your favorite breeds in a different light.

Happy at home

Every now and then I think that it is nice for you to hear about one of our success stories. This medium is a great way to do this because being able to include images means that we can say more than any words could.

Today’s Happy At Home candidate is Tilly (Previously known as Fudge.)
Fudge first arrived at Animal Aid back in July this year. The victim of an all too common scenario, she was left behind at a rental property after her owners moved out. Fudge was quite a timid cat but her genuinely sweet nature shone through her lack of confidence.

Quietly she waited for her new family to find her and luckily for Fudge it didn’t take too long. Here are some words from her new family and the pictures of her indicate that she is one contented cat.

'Fudge' came home to live with us and is settling in very nicely. The first thing we did was to rename her TILLY as we felt she was too sweet for 'fudge'. Our Rough Collie Kawaii, is very excited about meeting her but so far they have only exchanged distant glances. We'll be waiting till Tilly is much more settled before making more formal introductions!’

‘She is so adorable and although we haven’t had her long and I knew she was quite timid she has already taken over my little study room. Here are some photos, both of them have her on my favorite and only chair in the study, and she's actually sleeping behind me on that very chair as I write to you!
