Up-to-date IDs make reunions easyMORE than 20 dogs escaped from properties in the Yarra Ranges during New Year's Eve celebrations.But Coldstream Animal Aid expects most to be returned home thanks to owners making sure their pets were microchipped and wearing ID tags. The shelter received 22 dogs on New Year's Eve and Day, two fewer than last year's record of 24. Animal Aid general manager Nell Thompson said as of last Wednesday, 11 of the dogs had been picked up by their owners, and only three of the remaining dogs had no up-to-date identification. Normally between five to 10 per cent of pets picked up during the New Year's Eve period fail to be reclaimed. "Provided that your details are correct and up to date, microchips are the best way to ensure that your pet is returned to you safely, said Ms Thompson. Animal Aid is also encouraging owners to remain alert for more fireworks on Australia Day and during thunderstorms, which may panic pets.
