| Good luck kitty, it's not easy being black |

THROW away the bad luck today - Friday the 13th - and adopt a black cat. The much maligned felines are making a comeback and busting myths along the way. Animal Aid spokeswoman Diane Falzon said black cats were often overlooked when owners chose a new pet. "All black cats are actually quite hard to re-home ... they have a limited appeal," she said. Cats with a little white fur, often referred to as tuxedo or Sylvester cats, were more popular than pure black cats. Ms Falzon said some folklore suggested it was good luck to own a black cat, have a black cat greet you at the door, or to touch a black cat. It is said to be "fantastic luck" to meet three black cats in succession. Nell Thompson, general manager of the Coldstream shelter, called on wannabe cat owners to stop judging them by the colour of their fur. "Adopting a black cat is the same as adopting a cat of any breed or colour ... like humans, cats have varied personalities and needs, so it is very important that both the owner and cat are a good match," she said. This year we will see three Fridays fall on the 13th: Today and in April and July. Good luck superstitions to help break the Friday the 13th spell include: IF you find a horse shoe with the open end facing you, nail it over the door with the open end up so the good luck doesn't spill. FOUR-leaf clover protects humans and animals from evil spells. CARRY a rabbit's foot in your pocket. The older, the more luck they bring. |
