According to Animal Aid, there are simply too many unknown risks for the pets involved. Pet owners who advertise their pets as 'free to good home,' may have the best intentions for their pet, but unfortunately, in some cases the reality of using this medium can result in dire consequences. At the time, the respondents to these ads may act compassionately and be loving to the animal, but this may all be a façade. Animal Aid recommends that you seek professional help when rehoming your pets and the best place to do that is at Animal Aid or other responsible shelter or rescue group. In Victoria, many breed clubs also have a rescue component to their operation. According to Animal Aid General Manager, Nell Thompson, "Shelters like Animal Aid are not the end of the road for pets, it is in fact a road to rescue," she said. "As owners we are responsible for our pet's futures and this means finding the safest way to rehomed if necessary." "Repay your pets devotion by first trying to resolve the situation that has led you to want or feel that you need to give them up. Animal Aid may be able to help you resolve the issue. If this can't be achieved at least seek advice and take them to a caring organisation that will do their utmost to find them a suitable home. "In order to improve the traceability of pets, a new law has just been introduced that requires all breeders, shelters or rescue groups to display the pets microchip number or the organisations Domestic Animal Business registration number in any advertising. If pets are given away via 'free to good home, there is no requirement to do so and so there is less ability to trace the pet into the future. "All pets deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and live a life of inclusion, in a secure and nurturing environment. Don't let your pet become a victim of neglect and cruelty." |
