Nutmeg, a common ingredient in Christmas cooking can be very toxic to animals if given in large amounts and may lead to problems with pets nervous system. Onions should also be avoided as they are toxic to pets and high fat foods can also cause pancreatic complaints and gut upsets. According to Animal Aid General Manager, Nell Thompson, a typical Christmas roast may also be detrimental to a pet. "Cooked bones are dangerous as their density and structure changes during the cooking process. This makes it very difficult for pet's stomach acids to break down the bone, causing all sorts of nasty problems such as obstructions and even perforation," she said. "A raw bone is the best Christmas treat for your dogs and for cats, a raw chicken neck or wing, will do the trick." For Sampson, Animal Aid's overweight Labrador, Christmas lunch will be a very special time. Despite being on a strict diet, Sampson will be enjoying a boiled turkey breast without the skin (a good lean meat) and somesteamed vegetables such as carrots and beans. As a special treat, Sampson will have a raw marrow bone trimmed of fat and a baked dog biscuit. Having started out on his weight loss campaign at a staggering 85 kg, the black lab is now a much healthier 61.4kg, well on his way to his recommended 45 kg. Animal Aid's Amber Lavery, Sampson's vet and foster parent, says that Sampson has achieved many milestones over the last six months and has done extremely well with his new healthy regime. "Sampson's Christmas lunch will not distract him from his great work so far, but it is guaranteed to be a tasty and enjoyable meal for him." |
