| Dodgy breeders target |

Newspaper Article: Gippsland Times and Maffra Spectator | Tuesday 24 January 2012 | Hayley PlumridgeLocal animal attendants are hopeful the changes to the Domestic Animal Act (1994) will force "dodgy animal breeders" out of business. Since the changes, any dog or cat must be microchipped before it is sold or given away. Animal Aid Fulham manager Debby Goddard said she hoped the new legislation would make people think twice about advertising animals for sale. However, Ms Goddard feared the new legislation would increase the number of unwanted animals being "dumped". "People put animals in the paper free to good home but really they're free to any home," she said. "It happened just last week that someone advertised a dog free to good home and within an hour after picking it up the new owners had brought it here (Animal Aid). "We're hoping it will put all the backyard breeders and dodgy breeders that are only doing it to make a buck, out of business." The new legislation applies to private and domestic breeders and if not followed, can result in serious penalties. Under the new legislation, dogs and cats cannot be listed for sale or free unless the animal has been implanted with a microchip and the microchip number provided in any advertisements. Ms Goddard said in the 18 months Animal Aid had been operating in Fulham, the number of animals being taken to the facility with microchips had increased. "It makes it so much easier to trace the owners," she said. "Some dogs never get to go home because they have no microchip and we can't find their families. "People also need to remember to update the details on the microchip if they move. "We always put any animals that come into the pound onto the (Wellington) shire website, but people don't think to look on there for their missing pets. |
