Animal Aid’s Fostering Families – a Cornerstone Program to Save Lives Print E-mail
foster-release Leading animal welfare organisation, Animal Aid, urgently needs more people to volunteer as foster carers for litters of puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted.

This vital fostering program has resulted in thousands of young dogs and cats being given a chance of adoption.

Animal Aid currently have 44 active families and individuals who give their time to love and nurture these deserving little lives for up to an eight-week period, enabling our shelters in Coldstream, Sale and Bairnsdale to offer them their chance at lifelong happiness.

This early age taste of a home life is vital for their development and can shape who they will become and how well they will fit into family life and more families are always needed. In Bairnsdale, there are only three foster families on Animal Aids books.

Joy Ashfield, is a seasoned expert in fostering, having been a foster parent for more than 13 years, taking care of countless cats and kittens in the process.

"It is simply a wonderful feeling that in fostering these precious animals, they now have a greater chance in ultimately find a loving home." Joy said.

"Once they leave my care, they will then get the premier treatment at Animal Aid – microchipped, desexed, vet checked, the works – all ready to be matched with a new owner."

"I thrive on taking in the more challenging cases such as formula feeding fragile kittens every two hours, so it is very satisfying to see those kittens and cats in particular, leave my care and go to the shelter ready for adoption.

"I have the reputation of being somewhat of a cat whisperer at the shelter as I have the innate ability to tune in to the needs of the cats and identify their issues."

The Animal Aid foster program is totally funded by the organisation, fostering families need only invest their time and love in the animals, with plenty of cuddles along the way.

Animal Aid invites people interested in fostering to talk to the staff about the application process. Established in 1996, the Animal Aid Foster Program requires significant funding to remain active. The cat fostering program alone, costs Animal Aid more than $50,000 per year to run. This program is in desperate need of a financial sponsor to ensure that it can continue to save the lives of hundreds of puppies and kittens each year.
