The aim is to deliver a co-ordinated response to animal welfare matters that may arise out of an emergency. The MOU outlines the key responsibilities and delegation of tasks for the available assistance and provision of the temporary care and containment of animals. This includes the pivotal role Animal Aid will play in providing resources and equipment for the care of pets and livestock at allocated Relief Centres. According to Animal Aid General Manager, Nell Thompson, this alliance with the Yarra Ranges Council is a huge step forward in formalising processes in emergency situations both natural and manmade. "After the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, Animal Aid put forward a detailed submission to the Royal Commission on the fundamental issues faced by the community during that time." she said. "The MOU shows that Yarra Ranges Council has made a commitment and recognised the importance of planning for animals in emergency situations." "It also means that this Council acknowledges Animal Aid as an important resource for their Shire, the residents and their pets." Greg Talbot, Executive Officer of Local Laws, YRC, also acknowledges the long term value in creating such a partnership with Animal Aid. "Due to the lack of streamlined processes, there was a lot of confusion amongst the community as to what resources were available for pets and livestock during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfire disaster," he said. "We learnt so much from that experience and now feel we can better serve the community and their pets. "This MOU will enable the Council and Animal Aid to better coordinate our roles and resources during an emergency- providing much-needed support to our community and playing a key role in helping to minimise the loss of pets and livestock." |
